In case you missed it, Pac-Man turned 35 on May 22. The dot eating, ghost chomping, yellow mouth had been estimated to have consumed 10 billion quarters towards the end of the 20th Century. There have been numerous arcade sequels to the game, including Ms. Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man, and Pac-Man Battle Royale, a 4-player versus game where the Pac-Mans can eat each other along with the ghosts.
I was 11 when Pac-Man first came to the local arcade, though I much preferred Ms. Pac-Man when it was released a year later. I’m not sure I want to guestimate how many of those 10 billion quarters were mine. I still find myself putting a quarter into a Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man machine on the rare times I come across them today.
