Back in April, it was revealed, thanks to the Sony hack, that Ben Affleck had asked the PBS series Finding Your Roots not to include information they discovered that one of Ben Affleck’s ancestors had owned slaves. Show host Henry Louis Gates Jr. emailed Sony chief Lynton to ask his advice about what to do. In one of the email replies, Lynton said:
“I would take it out if no one knows, but if it gets out that you are editing the material based on this kind of sensitivity then it gets tricky. Again, all things being equal I would definitely take it out.”
Well, talk about irony.
Today the Associated Press has revealed that PBS has postponed the third season of Finding Your Roots while they sort out the mess that the show created by omitting the information about Ben Affleck’s slave-owning ancestor. PBS is making improvement to the show’s editorial guidelines, as well as requiring them to two additional staff members whose jobs will be to make sure the program that airs is factually accurate.
